January -- Steve helps clean up the home of an 80 year old military retiree after a 100 year flood on the Tippecanoe River in Carroll County. The water reached a height of 54 inches above the floor and nearly everything was trashed in this residence. They were able to rescue the ashes of his wife who died in 2007.

January -- Steve has long been a supporter of Indiana's family farmers. He often speaks to groups about ways to maximize the profitabilty of local farms by selling locally and buying locally.

February -- With the purchase of a membership, Steve becomes the 481st owner of the Lost River Market and Deli in Paoli. The business organization of this market as a cooperative is an ideal model for economic development in Indiana -- especially for our smaller cities and towns, most of which are suffering economic declines. Its benefits are local ownership, job creation, self-reliance, a source for locally produced food, an incubator of related businesses and re-use of building space that might otherwise be vacant.

The dollars spent in such a business re-circulate through the community and leverage the economy sevenfold. Lost River Market and Deli occupies a building first occupied by JayC Food Store -- an Indiana grocery chain -- in 1946. Ironically, the JayC Food Store, which had grown to a supermarket adjacent to a Walmart in Paoli, closed it's doors for business in February 2008.
